Apple releases iOS, iPadOS 16.1.1 and macOS 13.0.1

Apple today releases bug fix and security updates to its mobile and desktop operating systems.

Some of the issues fixed by this update include spontaneous WiFi disconnects reported by some iPhone users.

Also, Apple now limits AirDrop 'Everyone' access to 10 minutes in China addressing AirDrop spam that could be delivered, if user forgets to put more restrictive access mode for AirDrop.

This change though could be also a result of China regulators trying to limit spread of anti-government materials. This change seems to be affecting only devices bought in China and is not affected by regional settings in the operating system.

New updates are available for iOS and watchOS

Apple releases iOS 16.0.2 and watchOS 9.0.1 for Apple Watch Ultra.

iOS 16.0.2 fixes several issues found recently:

  • Display may appear completely black during device setup
  • Copy and paste between apps may cause a permission prompt to appear more than expected
  • VoiceOver may be unavailable after rebooting
  • Addresses an issue where touch input was unresponsive on some iPhone X, iPhone XR, and iPhone 11 displays after being serviced

Updates also resolve couple of security issues. Apple does not disclose the details though.

Apple publishes beta for iOS 16.1 and other platforms

Apple plans next release for its platforms. Now iOS 16.1 beta 2, iPadOS 16 beta 9 (aka iPadOS 16.1 beta 3), macOS 13 beta 8, watchOS 9.1 beta 2 and tvOS 16.1 beta 2.

Xcode 14.1 beta 2 is also released.

New beta brings new battery indicator to iOS showing both percentage and charge level on the icon. Excessive paste permission prompts are now also fixed. GPS issues reported on some iPhone 14 models seem to be fixed by this beta.

Another important change in iOS and other platforms is zeroing out of freed memory. Now when memory is freed, OS will put zeros to the whole block to ensure that data does not leak and prevent potential memory-related issues.

Developers and QA engineers need to recheck their apps!

This change is significant update on memory management on very low level!
Since some apps might still rely on accessing already freed memory, this change might bring crashes or other unexpected behavior. All apps need to be checked for proper memory management.
